What is the newest xbox 360's internal live adapter thing's area?

I have an older xbox 360 I have connected to a laptop and my laptop has to be somewhere near my house. Can the newest one be taken anywhere to anyplace since it has built wifi adapter or something, does it have to be near a wifi area, or does it have to be regestered to only 1 wireless router? Basically, could I take it from my house to a friend's miles away and still connect to live?
